The ice in Canada’s Arctic has been steadily melting since 1979. If this trend continues, large swaths of Arctic waters are expected to be free of ice altogether during the summer months. These changes are leading to a significant increase …

Many have written into the office to tell us that you would like to hear from me more often than the two written newsletters I send to everyone in Nunavut every year.

In response to that, my office is happy to share with you my first digital newsletter available here in English and Inuktitut:

This summer has been an exceptionally busy one and, as such, this edition is coming out a little late.

Responding to multiple requests, we will still be issuing physical newsletters to every residential mailbox in Nunavut twice a year, but we will also have two interim digital newsletters delivered to our mailing list.

Newsletter – December/2016, Issue #3

Senator Dennis Patterson

It has been a busy 6 months since my last newsletter!

I hosted a Defence Roundtable in Iqaluit on July 20 and made a submission to Minister Sajjan’s Defence Policy Review. There were many opportunities to ask questions of Ministers and the Government Representative in the Senate about issues that are important to Nunavummiut. The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples completed its study on the state of housing in Inuit Nunangat and is set to release its report in early 2017.

I have also had the opportunity to meet many wonderful, smart and talented young Inuit who have excelled in community service, academics, sports, and the arts and I feel privileged to be able to support them and recognize them in the Senate.

My newsletters are about the people I meet, the issues that I believe matter in Nunavut, and the work that I do in the Senate in an effort to help Nunavummiut.

The last session of 2016 has been a busy one. Among the many happenings in the Senate I had the opportunity to meet with various groups from Nunavut; spoke out on issues of importance to Nunavummiut such as LIFO and assisted-dying; and I travelled with the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples during our Inuit housing study.
